Question 1 - Basics about user environment:

1. Why do we make users and groups of users?
2. What is the use of limiting the number of simultaneous logons?
3. Those of you who have access to a local area network. Investigate which possibilities you have to set login restrictions, and which ones have you actually set?

Question2 - Request from HouseBuilders Inc.

The firm HouseBilders Inc has 50 employees. 30 of these have offices with a computer. We will assume that you have installed a Novell 4.1 network, all tests are done and the task of setting up the user environment is what is next. Take a look at the organisations chart over the 30 users that needs computers:

The employees are distributed like this:

• Wage/admin - 2 in each
• 3 employees in each group within productions
• 13 within sales
• 1 person at each leader position

HouseBuilders Inc produces utilities for the entrepreneur industry. Project group 1,2 ad 3 are development engineers for different new products and takes care of the firms research.

The software needs are as follows (you might add more if you wish):

• Text editor (Word): everybody
• Programming tools(C++, Visual Basic): Group 2 and 3
• Presentation tools (PowerPoint): Group 1,2 and 3 + sales
• Spread sheets (Excel): Wages/administration
• Waging database (Self development): Wages
• Administration database (Self development): Administrations

1. Set up a user environment (divide the employees into different groups) in a logical way. Feel free to add additional assumptions and explain these. Bear in mind that the system you choose is supposed to change the accesses to each department/group
2. Set up filter where the software mentioned above, and those you might include, are included
3. Set up a matrix that concerns all the software and all the groups you included in a) and that define the effective rights after a Novell 4.1 standard. An example:

Question3 - Novell rights

Find the effective rights given to arenw and petternw for the folders WORD, EXCEL, arenw and petternw when the folder structure and the rights matrix are given in figure 1 and table 1. The users does only have "File Scan"-rights (F) to the root folder VDI_SYS.
